My name is Eric. I work with the ALNF as the Executive Educational Advisor.
Last year’s NAPLAN results showed us that in some parts of the Northern Territory, only 1/5 kids can read at the minimum standard. This is unacceptable, because every Australian child should have the opportunity to learn.
But, we are making a difference.
Last year, across every community where we worked, at least 72% of children markedly improved their literacy skills. In my work with teachers, parents and students in remote Indigenous communities, I see how, together, we are contributing to sustainable change and expanding opportunities.
If you want to support an effective movement that’s already achieving amazing results and that needs resources to keep making change, then choose Wall of Hands 2015. Because of people like you, we have been able to work side-by-side with communities to close the Indigenous literacy gap.
Let’s finish what we started. Donate to Wall of Hands 2015 today.
Recently, I led a poetry camp for Year 6 Indigenous students “out bush”, where they wrote some outstanding and honest poetry. The students then performed their work for the rest of the school. When the bell went for the end of the day, no-one moved. Everybody stayed, respectfully and enthusiastically, to hear the spoken word. I was reminded how powerful it is to have a voice.
Donate to help us reach our goal of $500,000.
Thanks to the cooperation and trust of the people we work with in communities, children and young adults are undertaking the type of education that they need to expand and impact the world around them. That’s why we won’t stop until 5/5 kids can read.
