Indigenous Languages Matter

NAIDOC Week is a time for all Australians to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s theme is “Our Languages Matter”, and highlights the importance and richness of our nation’s many Indigenous First Languages.

The Wall of Hands campaign supports not only literacy in English, but where possible, allows ALNF to work with communities in First Language.

Being able to read and write is a basic human right, and this includes the right to be literate in your Mother Tongue. Article 13 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples reminds us of Australia’s international obligations:

“Indigenous people have the right to revitalise, use, develop and transmit to future generations their histories, languages, oral traditions, philosophies, writing systems and literatures.”
