First Language App

The ALNF aims to work in Aboriginal languages where possible. As part of our First Language Literacy and Early Language and Literacy programs, we work with communities to develop digital and physical resources in First Language.

The ALNF is proud to announce that they have completed two groundbreaking apps (a digital dictionary and a sounds and letters app) available for iPads, computers and smart boards in Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara.

The ALNF has built an interactive platform that enables Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara speaking communities in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in South Australia to update, manage and use the First Language digital resources for their children and communities.

The ALNF has collaborated and worked closely with locally based organisations, including Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Media, community members and local schools.

The communities have enjoyed seeing their languages digitised and transformed into reading and writing resources for their children and schools.

“It’s good work. They ask us and we record and document the language for the kids. And it’s good work, we are happy. So they can talk Yankunytjatjara as they get older. So they can learn and learn along the way, want to keep learning. So the kids can learn and be strong in their own language. So they don’t lose it, so it can be strong.” Ngupulya and Shannon, Mimili, S.A.
