The Wall of Hands Appeal is The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation’s (ALNF) annual fundraising and awareness campaign, which encourages Australians to raise their hands to help close the Indigenous literacy gap so that all children have the opportunity to write their own bright futures.
Australians have the chance to raise their hands in support of Indigenous Literacy by donating to the Wall of Hands Indigenous Literacy Appeal. Together we will work towards achieving 100% literacy rates among Indigenous children in Australia.
To date, the campaign has contributed over $3.5 million to fund urgently needed literacy programs for Indigenous children and their communities. Joining the movement is simple. Go to www.wallofhands.com.au to make a donation to the national Wall of Hands.
“We believe all Australians have the right to literacy, because being able to read and write is a basic human right.”
Kim Kelly, ALNF’s Co-Founder
“Imagine not being able to drive a car because you can’t read the driver’s test, imagine your child is ill and you can’t read the dosage on a medicine bottle, and imagine not being able to use an ATM or fill out a form. These are just some of the day to day struggles suffered which can be eliminated through the delivery of ALNF’s literacy programs.”
The Wall of Hands Appeal gives all Australians the opportunity to do something simple to transform Indigenous literacy for generations to come. Dr Tom Calma: “ALNF’s literacy programs are making a real difference to so many young lives and in the long run, their learning will make a difference to the generations that follow.”
